Motorcycles will continue to be banned from running on most city roads, according to a circular recently released by the Shenzhen Municipal Transport Bureau.

The measures will be valid until Dec. 31, 2025. 

During the ban period, Shenzhen aims to enhance motorcycle safety management, ensure the continuity of the policy, and prevent accidents arising from the use of motorcycles. 

According to the circular, motorcycles are not allowed to run at any time on all roads in Futian, Luohu, Nanshan, Yantian, Bao’an, Longgang, Longhua and Pingshan districts. In Guangming District, motorcycles are banned on most roads except the section between the Shenzhen-Dongguan boundary and Xinqiao Overpass along National Expressway No. 107, and the section between the Shenzhen-Huizhou boundary and Baishi Road along Pingshan Boulevard. 

In Dapeng New Area, motorcycles are prohibited from entering most roads in the area except Pingxi, Pengfei, Kuipeng, Nanxi, Haibin, Tongfu, Pingkui and Yankui roads.

Motorcycles registered for special uses such as for urgent public facility repairs, police patrol vehicles and motor wheelchairs for the disabled are exempted from the ban.

Those who violate the measures will be punished, as per traffic regulations.

Shenzhen used to witness high death tolls from traffic accidents involving motorcycles. A total of 137 people were killed in motorcycle-related accidents in 2001 and the death toll rose to 296 in 2002. Most of the robberies at that time Also involved motorcycling robbers snatching belongings from pedestrians. In 2003, the city introduced a ban on motorcycles from most roads.
