The Memorial Hall for the Great Rescue of Chinese Cultural Celebrities in Longhua District announced its reopening to the public on the evening of July 20 to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

The memorial hall was opened in 2005 to commemorate the almost 200-day-long rescue in which the Dongjiang Column of the Guangdong People’s Anti-Japanese Aggression Guerrilla Force led by the Communist Party of China rescued more than 800 Chinese intellectuals during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong in late 1941. It is a themed museum boasting the largest collection of archives and relics of the great rescue in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.

A ceremony paying tribute to the CPC’s centenary was staged at the renovated memorial hall, featuring revolution-themed dancing and sung performances and a light show featuring the hall’s new lightning installation.

Li Lei, deputy Party chief of Longhua District gave a speech at the ceremony. “We should learn from the history of the great rescue and let the revolutionary spirits guide us to better carry out the ‘Digital Longhua’ program,” said Liu.

Descendants of the martyrs attended the ceremony as well, including Zeng Depeng, son of the Dongjiang Column commander Zeng Sheng, and Wang Yongqian, son of the Dongjing Column deputy commander Wang Zuoyao.

Wang spoke excitedly to the audience that the memorial hall helps pass on the CPC history and Chinese revolutionary culture to the next generations.

Longhua authorities plan to make the memorial hall and its cultural values better known to the public by holding more events and promoting the hall in its revolutionary tourism route.
