Three more blocks were recognized as Shenzhen blocks with distinct cultural characteristics, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.

They are Dawan Ancestral Residence in Pingshan District, Huaqiangbei Electronics Street in Futian District and Dalang Fashion Town in Longhua District. An award ceremony was held at Dawan Ancestral Residence on Sunday to mark the new addition to the city’s 10 blocks with distinct cultural features. Kylin dance, a provincial intangible cultural heritage, was staged to mark the special occasion.

Since 2018, Shenzhen has rolled out upgrades and renovations for 10 blocks with distinct characteristics as part of its efforts to build itself into a culturally significant city and a modern civilized city demonstrating China’s soft power.

In February this year, the first seven blocks were recognized for their distinct cultural characteristics after two years of renovation work. These blocks are Dapeng New Area’s Dapeng Fortress, Longhua District’s Guanlan Printmaking Base, Longgang District’s Dafen Oil Painting Village and Gankeng Hakka Town, and Nanshan District’s Nantou Ancient Town, Shekou Sea World and OCT Loft Creative Cultural Park.

Dawan Ancestral Residence, built in 1791, covers 15,000 square meters and is China’s largest and most completely preserved Hakka-style square compounds. In 2002, it was classified as a provincial protected historical site. In 2008, it was placed on the city’s list of 10 blocks with distinct cultural characteristics.

In the past two years, the Pingshan District Government has repaired and reconstructed Dawan Ancestral Residence into a cultural base featuring Hakka food, crafts as well as cultural and creative products. Over 100 cultural activities, such as concerts and exhibitions displaying customs from Hakka culture and works of artists, have been organized at the base.

Some centuries-old rooms and halls have been transformed into handicrafts studios for visitors to experience little Hakka drawing, Hakka-style wooden sculpture making and tea culture in the Song Dynasty and a guqin (a seven-string Chinese zither) performance room.

Moreover, Pingshan has opened a bazaar near Dawan Ancestral Residence, which attracted many Hakka-style handicraftsmen to set up studios.
