The first hydrogen-powered takeout e-bike commercial project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) was put into operation in Dalang Subdistrict, Longhua District, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported yesterday.

The project was pioneered by the Longhua District Development and Reform Bureau, high-tech company AE&M, and food delivery giant Meituan.

A hydrogen-powered e-bike can run up to 120 kilometers on one charge and can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 225.4 kilograms per 10,000 kilometers in a year compared with a portable e-bike.

It uses AE&M’s hydrogen fuel cell technology and Meituan uses is for daily takeout food deliveries in the city.

The e-bike is equipped with two 1-liter solid-state hydrogen storage tanks, together with auxiliary systems such as a hydrogen power generator system, a control system and a DC-to-DC converter. It can reach up to 120 kilometers on one charge of 110 grams of hydrogen.

It is expected that the e-bikes’ solid-state hydrogen storage tanks can be purchased in convenience stores or supermarkets in the future, and the empty tanks can also be placed in storage boxes for regular replacement, which greatly increases travel efficiency, according to a project leader.

The project has been included in Longhua’s future city scenario project.
