A massive red building has recently topped out at Guanlan High-Tech Industrial Park in Longhua District, drawing attention for its distinctive, mountain-like form.

Officially named the Shenzhen Rehabilitation Center, the project is also known as “Healing Hill,” a reference to its stepped, terraced design that rises gradually like a mountain.

As a flagship public welfare project under Shenzhen’s initiative to provide inclusive support for vulnerable groups, the center is being developed as a large-scale, multi-functional service platform for people with disabilities, with a focus on employment, entrepreneurship and social integration.

Covering a site area of about 26,500 square meters, the 89.7-meter-high building comprises 20 above-ground floors and two underground levels. Its architectural design features extensive rooftop gardens created through tiered setbacks, visually echoing a neighboring barrier-free park. Vertical forest techniques are used to introduce greenery throughout the structure, helping create a safe, comfortable and ecologically friendly environment.

Barrier-free principles are embedded throughout the project, from urban connectivity to interior circulation. Step-free access seamlessly links sidewalks, entrances, parking areas and indoor facilities into a continuous accessible route. The center provides 75 accessible parking spaces and is equipped with 27 barrier-free elevators—nearly twice the number found in conventional buildings—ensuring smooth vertical movement for all users.

Interior spaces incorporate a range of inclusive design features, including tactile guidance paths, voice-assisted elevators, adjustable dining tables, accessible restrooms, and customized sports and cultural venues. Information accessibility is also emphasized through color-coded signage, Braille assistance and tactile floor indicators.

The project’s people-centered design has earned multiple accolades, including a national award for barrier-free architectural design, the CREDAWARD Excellence Award, and the WAFX Award at the 2024 World Architecture Festival.

Scheduled for completion in January next year, “Healing Hill” will focus on vocational rehabilitation, education and training, and innovation-driven entrepreneurship for people with disabilities.
