The sound of tap dancing on a rainy stage is not something people usually expect in Shenzhen’s Longhua District, a place known for its high-tech industry and innovation. But on Jan. 31, at the newly opened Luhu Art Center, the famous London West End production of "Singin’ in the Rain" brought music and joy to the audiences. It also showed the district’s big dreams to connect with the world.

Since opening on Jan. 22, the classic MGM musical became the first international show to appear at Luhu Art Center. For special guests attending the Jan. 31 show — including business leaders and skilled professionals — this was more than just a famous story from Hollywood’s golden age. It showed how Longhua is growing and becoming more international.
"It felt like I was inside the movie," said Dr. Liu Chaoran, a postdoctoral fellow at Longhua District People’s Hospital. As a fan of the original film, Liu said the live show had more emotion and energy than watching it on screen. "Even the parking service and help for late visitors were very professional. It made me feel respected."
Culture brings talent

Performers from the London West End production of "Singin’ in the Rain" dazzle the audience with a vibrant umbrella dance during opening night at Luhu Art Center on Jan. 31.
This performance was not only for entertainment. Longhua leaders see cultural events like this as an important way to attract global talent. By offering high-quality art and experiences, the district wants to build a place where international professionals can enjoy life and feel at home.
Jiang Jie, assistant to the chairman at Centered Power (Shenzhen) Co., said the show was an “international visual feast.” She believes cultural activities are important for city growth. "Bringing famous international shows helps create a better business environment and makes Longhua more attractive to new talent," she said.
Art reaches everyone

The show also reached outside the theater. In a fun surprise at the Shenzhen Art Museum on Jan. 28, actors from the West End cast gave a flash performance in the lobby. Visitors were excited and joined in the joyful moment.
This kind of open and welcoming activity is part of Longhua’s plan. The musical team also offered backstage tours and small meet-and-greet events with the music director and technical staff. These special experiences let local people see the creative work behind the scenes — a good match for a district known for innovation.
A new way of life in Longhua
When the final song ended and the audience gave a standing ovation, it was not only for the actors. It was also for Longhua itself — a district that is evolving to become more open and international.
Officials from the Longhua District Bureau of Culture, Media, Tourism, and Sports said their goal is to build a warm and welcoming community. They want talented people to live, work, and stay in Longhua.
In this fast-growing part of Shenzhen, it seems the "classic rain" is just the beginning. More sunshine, more culture, and more global connections are on the way.
