HUA HUB is a joint project by UNDP, the China International Centre for Economic and Technical Exchange (CICETE), and the People’s Government of Shenzhen Longhua District (Longhua District Government). It aims to support Longhua District in designing and applying innovation driven localized sustainable development policies and pathways in a mega city context in line with Shenzhen’s mandate as a National SDGs Innovation Demonstration Zone.
The tasks of HUA HUB are structured to advance sustainable development in Shenzhen and serve as a model for megacities globally. Based on the document, its core responsibilities include:
Facilitating International Collaboration
Establish a global innovation network by linking with UNDP’s 130+ global accelerators and international organizations.
Host international conferences and form expert committees to share knowledge and resources.
Driving Green Industrial Transformation
Support Shenzhen’s "1+2+3" modern industrial system (e.g., digital economy, new energy, medical devices) through low-carbon initiatives, green product development, and international project roadshows.
Promote sustainable practices in industries like modern fashion and healthcare.
Empowering SMEs and Entrepreneurs
Build networks for SMEs to enhance innovation and internationalization.
Provide training on ESG standards, sustainable finance, international procurement, and leadership, helping SMEs attract investments and expand globally.
Engaging Youth in International Community Building
Develop model international neighborhoods (e.g., Shenzhen North Railway Station International Business District, Dalang Fashion Town) with input from global youth and experts.
Create inclusive, well-equipped communities to attract and retain international talent in Shenzhen.
Promoting Global Knowledge Exchange
Encourage participation in international forums (e.g., COP) to share Shenzhen’s sustainable development stories and learn from global best practices.
Showcasing Sustainability Achievements
Operate an exhibition space to display UNDP’s work, Shenzhen’s sustainability progress, and Longhua’s case studies.
Engage the public through interactive features like carbon footprint games and innovation workshops.
The five-year project (2024-2029) focuses on three strategic priorities:
First, incorporating sustainable development ideas into Longhua’s development vision and strategy, encouraging pathways towards green, inclusive development.
Second, connecting with UNDP’s innovation ecosystem spanning over 130 countries so that Longhua can both benefit but also contribute to the global innovation ecosystem.
Finally, cultivating inclusive megacities concept and nurturing local SDGs change-makers through creating platforms for networking and mutual-learning, particularly for women and youth- led MSMEs, entrepreneurs and innovators in Longhua.
