Set between wooded hills and the waters of Luhu, the new Longhua Library combines extensive collections with spaces for study, exhibitions, family activities and digital experiences.

Located at the Luhu Art Center in Guanhu Subdistrict, the library covers approximately 32,400 square meters across two underground levels and four floors above ground. It has more than 1,800 seats and is designed to accommodate a collection of 1.1 million books.

The building’s interior is inspired by a forest. Concrete-filled steel columns resemble rows of trees while helping create large, open reading areas. Natural light enters through the structure, connecting the indoor spaces with the surrounding landscape.

For children and families

The first floor houses the library’s principal facilities for younger readers.

A picture-book area and parent-child activity space cater to families with young children. The children’s reading area, designed for readers age 6 to 12, offers children’s literature, fairy tales, audiobooks and interactive digital reading resources.

Teenagers ages 12 to 18 have a separate, quieter reading area containing school-recommended titles, coming-of-age fiction, history comics and study spaces.

Beyond conventional reading rooms, young visitors can explore a building-block workshop, an immersive painting space, a children’s activity area and a cinema. Virtual reality facilities and automated book-storage technology add interactive elements to the library experience.

Literature, social sciences and local history

Visitors explore the library’s spacious multilevel interior, which provides more than 1,800 seats.

The upper floors provide quieter reading and study environments for adults.

The literature and social sciences section contains fiction, essays, history, psychology and biographies. A dedicated reading area for older adults is designed around their reading needs, while the Longhua Memory Hall introduces the district’s history and development.

Visitors can also use group discussion rooms, an audiovisual room and a book donation and exchange center.

Science, music and public programs

The natural sciences section offers resources for students, researchers and readers interested in science and engineering. A spacious stepped reading area provides a more informal setting for reading or taking a break.

The same floor also includes a music experience center, a lecture hall for talks and other public programs, and a cultural and creative space offering refreshments.

International and artistic perspectives

The library has a dedicated section for foreign-language publications and literature from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, supporting language learning, academic research and wider access to publications from different regions.

Open exhibition areas host displays devoted to subjects such as painting, photography and intangible cultural heritage, allowing visitors to experience visual art alongside the library’s collections.
