Last time, we introduced some of the most useful apps for international visitors living in Shenzhen. WeChat, Alipay, maps, food delivery... many of these tools can be registered with an overseas phone number first, helping you get started in Shenzhen more quickly.

If you plan to stay in Shenzhen for a longer period, having a Chinese phone number can make life much easier. Whether you need to contact businesses, receive verification codes, or access certain local services, a Chinese phone number will usually make things more convenient.

So in this issue, we're going to talk about a very practical topic: How can international visitors get a Chinese SIM card in Shenzhen?

How urgent it is to get a Chinese SIM card may depend on the length of your stay in China.

Longer stay (more than 7 days): It is recommended to get a Chinese SIM card as early as possible, which will make daily tasks, communication, and receiving text messages much smoother.

When your number is called, bring your valid ID to the counter. The process includes the following steps:

  • Choose a phone number

  • Select a phone plan

  • Set up your service password

  • Complete facial recognition verification

  • Sign the network access agreement

  • Pay the first month's fee

Common payment methods include: RMB cash, Alipay and WeChat Pay.

Notes

The application can only be proceeded after the verification is completed successfully, so the SIM card user must visit the service hall in person.

2. For those under the age of 16, their parents or legal guardians should go to store to apply for SIM cards on their behalf. Parents or legal guardians shall bring their valid ID documents, valid ID documents for the minors, and proof of guardianship

3. It is recommended to download a translation app in advance or ask a Chinese-speaking friend to accompany you, to avoid delays caused by communication difficulties.
