The “Tracing the Greater Bay Area·Heritage in Continuum Greater Bay Area Education Heritage Trail Check-in and lucky Draw Event”, jointly organized by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, has officially launched.
Among the 20 featured heritage sites selected across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the Former Site of the Longheu Girl’s School in Dalang Subdistrict, Longhua District, stands out as the only selected site in Shenzhen.
The story of the Longheu Girl’s School dates back more than 160 years. Its predecessor was the Basel Mission School, founded in 1862 by missionaries from the Swiss Basel Mission. It was one of the earliest missionary schools in Lingnan dedicated to educating girls. In 1891, the school relocated to Langkou Village in the former Xin’an County (today’s Langkou Community, Dalang Subdistrict, Longhua District) and was officially renamed Longheu Girl’s School. At the time, the Hakka community in Langkou Village embraced new ideas with remarkable openness and inclusiveness. This welcoming environment nurtured one of the region’s earliest institutions dedicated to girls’ education. As one of Shenzhen’s first schools for girls, the Longheu Girl’s School challenged the long-standing belief that girls should not receive formal education, bringing the ideals of modern education into a traditional Hakka village. The school initially adopted a Chinese-German bilingual curriculum before transitioning to Chinese-English instruction during the later Republican era, creating a unique blend of Western educational philosophy and local cultural traditions.Empowering Girls in a Hakka Village

Between 1913 and 1918, the school further broke social barriers by admitting boys and was subsequently renamed Devout and Chaste School. At its peak, it enrolled hundred students and earned recognition both in China and overseas.
A Living Museum of Modern Education
Having weathered more than a century of history, the former site of the Longheu Girl’s School remains remarkably well preserved and is regarded as one of China’s finest surviving examples of a missionary girls’ school.

The architecture itself reflects a harmonious fusion of Chinese and Western influences. The entrance features a traditional Chinese paifang-style gateway bearing the inscription “虔贞学校(Longheu Girl’s School)” in grey stucco, complemented by Western-style columns. The main building follows a two-storey, three-bay layout with an arcade adorned by decorative arches. Constructed with rammed lime-earth walls, traditional timber framing and grey-tiled pitched roofs, it seamlessly combines Western architectural elements with the craftsmanship of Hakka vernacular architecture.
