Attention, foreign nationals visiting Shenzhen for tourism, renting a home, or staying with friends or relatives: the National Immigration Administration has rolled out the "Online Registration of Accommodation Outside Hotels for Foreign Nationals" service nationwide. Procedures that previously required an in-person visit can now be completed on your mobile phone in just a few minutes.

Online and offline registration methods hold equal legal validity

According to Article 39 of the Exit and Entry Administration Law of the People's Republic of China, hotels handle accommodation registration for foreigners staying in hotels. For those staying in non-hotel accommodations (e.g., rented apartments, relatives' homes), the foreigner or the host must register with the local public security organ within 24 hours of check-in.

This type of registration can be handled directly online, eliminating the need to visit a public security organ in person. Online registration holds the same legal effect as on-site registration. Offline channels remain available, allowing individuals to choose either method.

Four access points

You can complete the process through the NIA Government Service Platform: the government service website (s.nia.gov.cn), the "NIA 12367" app, or the "NIA 12367" mini-programs on WeChat or Alipay. After registration and authentication, enter the "Services for Foreigners – Accommodation Registration" module, follow the prompts to complete the steps, and view your record under "Registration Record Inquiry" upon completion.

Who can apply? Either the foreigner or the host (landlord, host family; Chinese or foreign citizens) can apply. For first-time applications, it is recommended that the host assist to ensure the accuracy of the residence information. Those staying in their own residence, or those who have previously registered the same address on this platform, may complete the process themselves. Additionally, those returning to their own residence within China, or returning to their regular residence with a valid residence permit or permanent residence permit, are not required to register again.

Please notice that accommodation registration is a statutory obligation. Pursuant to Article 76 of the Exit and Entry Administration Law of the People's Republic of China, failure to complete the registration as required shall result in a warning and may be subject to a fine.
