The final round of the 2025 Longhua District Bilingual Speech Competition for Chinese and Expat Residents, organized by the Longhua District Foreign Affairs Office, was successfully held at the Longhua International Cooperation Center (LICC) on Sept. 6.

Following a competitive selection process, 24 standout contestants comprising both Chinese and expat residents progressed to the final round. Chinese speakers delivered their addresses in English, while non-native participants spoke in Chinese, each engaging with the theme “The Future in Longhua.” Speakers shared personal narratives and offered perspectives on the district’s evolution into an innovative, international community.

Judge Frank David Schrader, an American instructor of English at Shenzhen Polytechnic University, observed notable improvements since the previous edition two years ago. He stressed that compelling speeches convey authenticity and individuality, creating a genuine connection with listeners.

The contest was part of Longhua’s ongoing initiative to strengthen its global engagement and provided a constructive platform for intercultural dialogue and learning.

This year’s foreign champion, Ukrainian resident Yuriy George Hryhorzhevskyy, spoke about his decade-long experience of living and working in Longhua. An educator specializing in civics and English, he also mentors fellow teachers. His winning presentation addressed the future of civic education in Longhua, emphasizing its vital role in fostering responsible citizenship and sustainable local development.

As a regular contributor to community English corners, he expressed his enthusiasm for participating in local events. He commended Longhua’s inclusive environment and Shenzhen’s efficient transport network, including its quick access to Hong Kong and other urban centers.
