A simple phrase — “Hello, your food is here” — is helping delivery riders in Shenzhen’s Longhua District bridge language gaps with a growing international community.

The phrase is part of the “Bee English Corner,” a practical training program launched in the Yicheng commercial area near Uniwalk (Longhua), one of the district’s busiest retail and lifestyle hubs. The initiative is supported by Longhua’s social work authorities and organized by Jinxin Community in partnership with volunteer groups and an English training provider.

Real scenarios, practical skills

Designed around riders’ daily work, the sessions focus on high-frequency situations such as confirming addresses, greeting customers and answering basic questions.

Through role-play exercises simulating office buildings, residential compounds and shopping areas, participants practice essential vocabulary and short functional phrases like “delivery,” “address” and “Have a nice day.” The goal is immediate, practical use rather than textbook learning.

Organizers say the program responds to rising demand. With more international visitors and residents frequenting major commercial hubs such as Uniwalk (Longhua), delivery riders increasingly encounter non-Chinese speakers — both during deliveries and on the street.

From gestures to communication

For many riders, the biggest shift is confidence.

“Before, I could only rely on gestures,” said a rider surnamed Wu. “Now I’ve learned some useful phrases. My pronunciation isn’t perfect, but I’m confident enough to speak.”

To fit the flexible and fast-paced nature of delivery work, each session includes recap segments so participants can keep up even if they arrive late or leave early due to orders.

Building a more international-friendly city

The English Corner is part of Longhua’s broader effort to create a more inclusive, internationally friendly urban environment, especially as the district prepares for major international events including APEC-related activities.

A total of 10 sessions are planned, covering not only basic language skills but also etiquette, emergency response and safe riding.

Officials say the impact goes beyond communication. Each interaction between riders and expat residents and international visitors contributes to the city’s global image.

“We hope these riders can become grassroots ambassadors connecting local communities with the world,” an organizer said.
