A 39-day assignment covering 22 matches across the United States, Canada and Mexico put veteran Chinese photojournalist Liu Zhankun’s equipment — and his stamina — to the test during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Instead of relying solely on the heavy equipment traditionally associated with major sports coverage, Liu carried a selection of lightweight accessories made by SmallRig, the flagship brand of Longhua-based Shenzhen Leqi Innovation Co., Ltd. The products helped him work faster in crowded media areas, reduce the weight of his kit and transmit photographs while moving between host cities.

The assignment illustrates the business model behind SmallRig’s international growth: turning specific problems encountered by photographers and videographers into products designed for a global market.

Designed around field conditions

Among the products Liu used was a hydraulic monopod that can be raised or lowered with one hand. In tightly packed media areas, the design allowed him to adjust his camera position without taking both hands away from his equipment, helping him respond quickly as play unfolded.

A SmallRig mobile data platform provided direct app-based backup, allowing Liu to transfer large volumes of photographs to his production team between matches. He also used a multifunctional selfie stick with a smartphone to capture additional perspectives when working alone, where competition rules permitted.

“Lightweight equipment does not have to come at the expense of professional performance,” Liu said. “Long lenses and camera bodies remain essential, but supporting equipment is becoming lighter and easier to use.”

Other international journalists at the tournament were also seen using SmallRig monopods, camera cages and extension arms to assemble more portable shooting systems. China Media Group crews used the company’s mobile video accessories with smartphones while reporting from spectator stands, interview areas and locations outside stadiums.

Sales offered another indication of demand. SmallRig said sales of one of its monopod models increased by 240% from the previous comparable period during the tournament.

Co-creation backed by Longhua manufacturing

SmallRig’s approach extends beyond producing individual accessories. The company works with more than 1,000 photographers worldwide to identify recurring problems in professional settings and jointly refine product designs.

This user-centered development model has produced equipment tailored to such challenges as rapid repositioning at sporting events, shooting in confined spaces and transmitting material remotely.

Longhua’s mold-making and precision-manufacturing capabilities help the company move products from development to production quickly. SmallRig has introduced approximately 1,350 products and serves customers in more than 160 countries and regions, according to company figures.

The company specializes in supporting equipment for cameras and smartphones, complementing Shenzhen’s broader imaging and consumer-electronics industries. Its portfolio now spans camera support systems, mobile video accessories, lighting, storage and other tools used in content production.

That expansion reflects a broader shift in the company’s positioning. SmallRig has evolved from an accessory supplier into a provider of integrated, portable production systems for photographers, filmmakers and mobile-content teams.

For Liu, who has covered 15 men’s and women’s World Cup tournaments during a career spanning more than three decades, the value of that innovation is practical: equipment that lets journalists carry less, move faster and remain ready for the decisive moment.
